Large restoration project planned for Romania’s Rasnov Citadel

13 June 2016

Romania’s Rasnov Citadel, one of the most popular historical monuments in Brasov county, is to enter a large restoration and conservation process, according to Rasnov mayor Adrian Vestea and historian Nicolae Pepene, director of the Brasov County History Museum.

“The project has already been drafted, we got the permits from the Ministry of Culture, and we can now submit the project for funding. Its total value amounts to EUR 3.9 million, VAT included,” said the mayor, cited by local Agerpres.

The project includes restoration, conservation, security, sanitation, indoor and outdoor landscaping, vertical systematization, promotion, and signage.

After the revamping process, the Citadel would include several spaces for interactive exhibitions and heritage items, and areas for festivals and concerts, according to Nicolae Pepene. The tourists may also be allowed to see the Citadel by night.

“Once this project is completed, the Rasnov Citadel would only need conservation and management works, for a very long period of time,” Pepene added.

The work is to start next year if the project receives the necessary funds. The initiators are to find out this fall if the project gets the funding. If the funds are not approved, it could be implemented with money from the local budget.

Rasnov Citadel is one of the best-preserved peasant citadels in Romania’s Transylvania. The fortress is located on a big hill near Brasov mountain resort, so don’t miss it if you are in the area because the view from the top is worth a while.
