Retail in Romania grows above European average

Romania’s retail will grow by 10% this year, according to a survey done by GfK in 32 countries in Europe.

The average growth in the retail sector will amount to 1.5% across Europe this year.

Hungary’s retail will see an increase of 6%, followed by Croatia, with 4-5.5%. In Poland, the retail is expected to grow by over 5% this year. After a two-year decline, the retail in Greece should also increase by 1% in 2017.

Even if it’s growing, the purchasing power in Romania is among the lowest in Europe. The situation is similar to that in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Macedonia, Albania and partly Turkey.

The regions in Romania where the purchasing power is slightly higher than the rest of the country include Bucharest and the counties of Cluj, Timis, Arad, Alba, Sibiu, Brasov, Prahova, Arges.
