Romania’s railway company seeks better connectivity with Moldova, Ukraine
Romania’s Ministry of Transport is analyzing measures for the development of railway connections with the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine, according to a document published on its website, quoted by Economica.net.
The measures envisaged address the different (wider) gauge used on the territory of the former Soviet Union (as well as Finland and Mongolia) and include the building of wide-gauge lines from the border to two train stations on the Romanian territory (Iasi and Nicolina) plus the purchase of equipment needed to convert Moldovan and Ukrainian trains to Romanian (European) gauge.
Such equipment will be installed in Constanta port as well, to handle the wagons arriving by ferry in Romania instead of Odessa. More wagons to link Constanta port with the border with Moldova/Ukraine will be purchased as well already equipped for using both gauges.
