Romania sends eight tonnes of medical supplies to Lebanon

10 August 2020

Romania sent on Saturday, August 8, eight tonnes of medical supplies to Lebanon. The supplies are meant to help treat the victims of the Beirut explosions, which left 150 dead, thousands wounded, and tens of thousands homeless.

The load was carried by two C-130 Hercules and C-27J Spartan aircraft, made available by the Romanian Air Forces.

Romania was among the countries that received a request from Lebanon’s Government for international assistance through the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

The Romanian Government, the civil society, and representatives of the Lebanese diaspora answered the request, and a relevant quantity of medical supplies was donated to Lebanon, the National Defense Ministry (MAPN) said in a press release.

“In a situation like the one Lebanon went through, no one can be left alone. It is a situation that surpasses the capacity of most counties in the world; it is normal to show solidarity. What we are doing is a small gesture compared to what we should do, including in the future, to support Lebanon in overcoming this disaster,” state secretary Raed Arafat, the head of Romania’s Emergency Situation Department (DSU), said, quoted by News.ro.

He explained that the help includes medical supplies and drugs that were purchased or dispensed from the state reserves, reaching those who most need them.
