Romania, among the most polluted EU countries
Romania ranks second among EU countries for aggregate environment damage costs by country, normalized against GDP. Bulgaria surpasses Romania while Estonia and Poland follow it.
The European Environment Agency recently published a report called Costs of air pollution from European industrial facilities 2008–2012.
Romania's thermal power station Sucursala Electrocentrale Turceni ranks third in the top 30 facilities with the highest absolute damage costs from emissions of selected air pollutants.
As for greenhouse gas emissions, Romania’s sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions dropped by 48% between 2005 and 2011.
However, the country is still affected by climate change, with temperatures rising by 0.5 degrees Celsius a year between 1988 and 2010.
