Romania cancels contract for highway construction on slow pace of work

23 November 2012

Yet another highway construction contract for Romania which does not go well. The contract for the first part of the Nadlac- Arad highway in Romania, built by Romstrade - Monteadriano Engenharia e Construcao - Donrep Construct, was recently canceled because of the slow pace of work.  The project is only 20 percent completed, even thought it should have been 70 percent completed.

The Prime Minister Victor Ponta said earlier this month that the bid for this highway segment was deemed as performed in incorrect conditions by the European Union, so it was possible to cancel it.

The Nadlac- Arad highway was split in two batches, on some 39 kilometers. The first batch was won by Romstrade-Monteadriano Engenharia e Construcao-Donep Construct, for some EUR 115 million, and the second by German company Alpine Bau, some EUR 124 million.

The funding comes from the Cohesion Fund from the European Union. Work started in fall last year and both segments should be finalized in 2013.
