28 December 2016

A third of the Romanian state’s revenues from environmental taxes currently come from households while industry was the main contributor on this segment ten years ago, according to a recent analysis of the National Statistics Institute (INS).

The state collected some EUR 3.65 billion from environmental taxes, in 2014, or over 2.4% of the GDP. Households had a contribution of 32.7%, whereas the share of the manufacturing industry amounted to 31.1% in 2014. The construction sector had the lowest share, namely 1.3%.

By comparison, the manufacturing industry had a contribution of 37.3% to the environmental taxes in Romania in 2006, followed by households, with a share of 28.3%. Back then, the revenues from such taxes were 2.4 times lower.

In 2014, Romania had seven taxes on transport, six on energy, two on resources, and one on pollution, according to the INS report.

The transport taxes totaled RON 1.74 billion (EUR 383 million) in 2014 for a number of over 86,900 new car registrations. Households had a share of RON 930 million (EUR 205) to the total amount.

The taxes on energy amounted to RON 14.4 billion (EUR 3.2 billion) in 2014, and the population had a share of RON 4.7 billion (EUR 1 billion).

Of the total taxes on pollution, amounting to RON 19.9 million (EUR 4.4 million), Romanian households accounted for 33.4%.
