Damen's Romanian subsidiary to partly build hulls for four frigates

04 July 2023

Local shipyard Damen Galati, one of the biggest players in the Romanian shipping industry, will be involved in a major EUR 4 billion project targeting the design and construction of four frigates for Belgium and the Netherlands.

"This [the project] is being done not only in the Netherlands but also at our yard in Romania, where hulls will be partially built," Damen Shipyards Group CEO Arnout Damen explained, according to Profit.ro.

These hulls will then arrive at Vlissingen for their further completion, installation and integration of weapon systems, and finally, commissioning of frigates to be delivered to the Belgian and Dutch navies.

Dutch Damen has signed with the Dutch Ministry of Defence and Thales a EUR 4 billion contract for the design, construction and delivery of four anti-submarine warfare (ASW) frigates, two for the Netherlands and two for Belgium. The entire project is a joint operation with the Dutch Ministry of Defence, with part of the work to be carried out by the ministry itself.
