Biggest online retailer in Romania sets date for 2017 Black Friday

25 October 2017

Romania’s biggest online retailer eMAG will hold this year’s Black Friday shopping event on Friday, November 17, one week before the official Black Friday in the US.

eMAG was the local retailer that first brought the Black Friday concept in Romania, in 2011, and the event has been growing each year since, with more and more local retailers joining it. However, eMAG has registered the biggest sales of all retailers participating in this campaign each year, even if some of its competitors have tried to turn the one-day event into a one-week or even one-month discount period.

About 94.3% of Romania’s population between 18 and 50 has heard about Black Friday, according to a Kantar Millward Brown survey carried out after last year’s edition. In 2016, almost half (47.5%) of the Romanians who bought something on Black Friday did it online and 41.5% made their purchases offline while the remaining 11% shopped both online and offline.

Over a third (36.8%) of those who bought something last year on this day did it from eMAG, the same survey showed.

“Given the constant growth we have seen each year, we expect that this year’s Black Friday will also set new records from all points of view,” said Tudor Manea, eMAG general manager.

The retailer will have over 2 million discounted products in its offer, including TV sets, smartphones, laptops, fashion and sportswear, furniture, toys, and many other items. Moreover, over 4,000 sellers on the eMAG Marketplace platform will also join this year’s edition.
