Romania generates 5 million tons of food waste every year
Romania generates 5 million tons of food waste every year, most of it being generated by consumers. A quarter of the food waste represents cooked food.
Fruits, vegetables, and bread together account for over 60% of the total food waste in Romania, according to a study concluded by EPC Consultanta de Mediu for the local nonprofit Asociatia MaiMultVerde, reports local Profit.ro.
About 50% of Romanians spend about 40% of their monthly income on food. In France or Switzerland people spend on average 14%, respectively 10% of their income on food.
Given the proportions, Romania’s food waste has a stronger impact than in other EU countries. A quarter of Romania’s population lives in poverty and have difficulties in procuring daily food, according to the study.
Romania has recently passed a law for reducing food waste.
