Romania gets EUR 440 mln from EC to modernize railway segment

11 November 2016

Romania’s National Railway Company CFR and the European Commission (EC) have signed the financing contract for the revamping of the Apata - Cata railway segment.

The EC has granted EUR 440 million for the project. The segment represents an important lot within the rehabilitation program of the Brasov-Sighisoara railway, part of the Rhine - Danube Corridor.

The modernization of the Apata-Cata segment, with a length of 28.4 kilometers, will contribute to the sustainable mobility on the Hungarian border-Curtici-Arad-Simeria-Sighisoara-Brasov sector, by increasing the velocity at 160 kilometers per hour.

The European Commission will contribute EUR 440 million to the project whereas the rest of the money, namely EUR 98.3 million, will be secured from the state budget.
