Romania, Greece and Bulgaria sign cooperation agreement on regional natural gas infrastructure
Romania, Greece and Bulgaria recently signed in Brussels a cooperation agreement for developing regional infrastructure for natural gas, reports local Wall-street.ro.
In February 2011, the European Council decided that each EU Member State should have at least two sources of natural gas and electricity by 2014, to counter any interruptions in gas deliveries from the Russian Federation.
Romania does not have yet a gas network connection to Bulgaria, although there have been talks for many years to build a pipeline between Giurgiu and Ruse. The gas pipeline, worth EUR 24 million, should be completed by 2016.
The Romanian gas system is connected to Hungary’s and the Republic of Moldova’s, but any interruption in gas imports from Russia could not be compensated by these two pipes.
