Romania has green light to buy US rocket system

07 September 2017

The US Congress has approved Romania’s request to acquire High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), the Romanian Defense Ministry (MApN) announced yesterday.

The acquisition is at an intermediate stage. Following the Congress’ approval, the two parts will have technical discussions and negotiations to determine the final procurement configuration.

They will also discuss the technological transfer options and the involvement of the national defense industry in providing the necessary equipment for production and maintenance, according to MApN.

Under the HIMARS Endowment Program, Romania wants to acquire 54 launching facilities and auxiliaries to equip three combat battalions. Acquiring the HIMARS system is part of the eight essential programs of endowment for the Romanian Armed Forces.

On August 1, Romania’s Supreme Defense Council (CSAT) approved the plan to equip the national army between 2017 and 2026. The eight procurement plans will have multi-annual funds of EUR 9.8 billion.
