Romania includes temporary driving license, bans radar detection in road safety strategy

Romanian drivers should buckle up for more legislative changes. The Government plans a National Strategy for road safety which will allow higher taxes for owners of two or more cars, the interdiction to use radar detection equipment and the temporary driving license. The measures target a decrease in the number of car accidents, which cause economic and social damages worth around 1.5 percent of the country's GDP.
Romanians will be allowed to drive even if they don't have a driving license, provided they are accompanied by a driver and that they graduated the minimum mandatory 10 grades.
Radar detection equipment will be forbidden, in an attempt to prevent road rage. Drivers will be able to pay fines immediately, based on a receipt issued by the police officer.
The executive plans to introduce special courts for car accidents to speed up the process, as well as influence the format of news about car accidents. People who apply for a driver's license will be submitted to full medical and psychological tests.
Romanians pay around 40 percent of the traffic fines every year, which total some EUR 104 million. The payment ratio in other EU countries is of 90 percent.
