Romania, last in EU for share of people working in culture
About six million people in the European Union worked in the culture field in 2014, or 2.9% of the total number of employees.
Romania ranked last, with only 1.1% of the total number of employees working in cultural activities, according to EU’s statistical office.
The highest shares of cultural employment were observed in Luxembourg (5.2%), Sweden (4.1%), Finland and the Netherlands (3.9%), and Denmark (3.8%). At the opposite end, the lowest shares were seen in Romania (1.1%), Slovakia (2%), and Bulgaria (2.1%).
In all member states, the share of people with university studies was higher in the culture sector than in other fields. At EU level, 60% of the employees in the culture field had university degrees, compared to 33% in total employment.
In Romania, 47% of the employees in the culture sector had university degrees, more than double compared to the general level of 18%.
