Romania make it to the semifinals of the Women's Handball World Championship
Romania’s team have made it to the semifinals of the Women's Handball World Championship after a dramatic victory against hosts Denmark, on Wednesday evening, December 16. The last time Romania played in the competition's semifinals was in 2007, after finishing on the second place in 2005.
The Romanians took the lead from the start of the match and managed to stay in front for most of the match. However, it wasn’t an easy win at all, as the Danish team managed to come back from three goals behind at the break and keep the score level in the final minutes of the match.
Romania missed a penalty throw in the last second of the match, when the score was 27-27, and the match went into overtime. The two sides continued neck to neck, but Romania managed to score in the last play and win the match 31-30, making it to the semifinals.
Star Cristina Neagu scored 15 of Romania's goals and was decisive in leading the team to the semifinal.
In the semifinals, Romania will again have to face Norway. The two teams have also met in the group stage, where Romania lost to Norway 22-26. However, the Romanians' gameplay has much changed compared to the early stage of the competition, when the team lost two other matches against Spain and Russia.
In the other semifinal, the Netherlands will meet Poland, who managed to pull a big surprise by eliminating Russia, who were among the favorites to win the title.
The semifinals are on Friday, December 18.
