Romania plans to include environment tax for cars in the fuel price
Romania plans to include the environment tax in the fuel price, according to government sources. The new tax may amount to RON 0.05 per liter of fuel. The money will reach the Environment Ministry’s accounts, according to Economica.net.
Car owners currently pay the environment tax once, when they register their cars and the tax varies depending on the fuel, emission standard, and age of the car. The tax, which was first introduced in early-2009, has had many forms over the past 7 years, but apparently all broke the European Union’s regulations.
An inter-ministerial working group has been searching for a solution to change the environment tax so that it would comply with EU rules. The EU’s Court of Justice decided at the beginning of June this year that the registration tax paid by the people who buy cars in Romania was illegal.
However, the authorities still collect the tax and those who register their cars have to pay it and then go to court against the state to recover it.
If the Government decides to include the environment tax in the fuel price, then all drivers in Romania will pay it based on how much fuel they use.
How big are the environmental taxes in Romania?
