Romania ranks third on IT&C sales growth, says Communications Minister

05 October 2011

Romania ranked third on the growth of sales in electronic and IT&C products this year and was only outranked by Slovakia and Russia, according to Valerian Vreme, the Minister of Communications in the country (in picture).

“IT is perhaps what we should all put our hopes on: the sector had a growth of 27 percent in the first half of this year, the best performance in the Romanian economy,” said Vreme.

The country's national broadband strategy aims at covering the 3,600 so – called 'white areas' to allow access to information for all Romanians in rural areas.

The Ministry currently works on contracting projects on e-commerce and on Enterprise Resource Planning, while hoping to attract funds and start implementing projects in 2012. Earlier this year, the Communications Ministry said it was planning a EUR 84 million project, funded by the European Union, to provide Internet access to the remaining unconnected areas in the country

Romania ranks fifth in a top on the average internet connection speed by country/region in the first quarter of 2011, with 6.6 Mbps, according to the Akamai’s State of the Internet report. Romania’s internet connection speed recorded a growth of 4.9 percent compared to the same period last year.
