Police dismantle refugee camp in Western Romania

31 July 2017

The Police dismantled on July 31 a refugee camp illegally set up at the outskirts of Timisoara, a city in Western Romania, the public television TVR reported.

The camp, which was located very close to the city's refugee center, had been set up by refugees from Syria, Iran and Iraq, and included 42 people: 10 women, 15 men and 17 children. They were waiting for a guide to help them cross the border further into Western Europe. The refugees had set up tents and had been living on meadow for the past days.

All of them had documents allowing them to stay in Romania. They had been previously hosted by the refugee centers in Bucharest, Giurgiu and Timisoara, according to News.ro.

“I was waiting here, in Timisoara, for an opportunity to cross into Hungary. I only want to reach a country in Western Europe and here in Timisoara I was hoping to find a faster way to do this,” a Syrian refugee told News.ro.

After being identified by the Police, the refugees will likely return to the centers that were previously hosting them.
