Romania tests train ticket purchase after onboarding
Commuters by train and tourists might be able to buy their train tickets after onboarding, rather than at the ticket vending areas before departure. The Romanian Passengers Railways Company CFR has implemented a pilot project in four high-speed trains to and from the seaside.
Each train supervisor will have a tablet and a printer and will be able to sell the train tickets onboard to those who did not get a chance to buy one in advance. This is one of CFR’s attempts to reduce fraudulent travel.
The software allowing CFR to sell train tickets remotely will connect with the company’s main server, for a live update of sold tickets.
The same software will allow the train supervisor to check tickets bought online, against the person’s ID. This will allow CFR to sell tickets online until up to an hour before the departure. Under the current system, a traveler can buy their ticket online with at least 12 hours before departure.
CFR is currently testing the system and the devices needed to implement it, such as personalized tablets. Once approved, the company will have to equip all its 1,400 daily trains with such tablets. The system would be first enforced on InterRegio trains, then on the Regio ones.
