Romania to pay almost EUR 190 mln to modernize frigates
Romania’s Defense Ministry plans to modernize the frigates King Ferdinand and Queen Maria.
The contract, which is estimated at some EUR 188 million, will be attributed via a restricted tender. The ships will be equipped with anti-aircraft missile.
The companies that want to take part in the auction need to prove that they have delivered similar products in the last five years, and their cumulative value is of at least EUR 188 million, reports local Hotnews.ro.
Romania has significantly increased its defense budget in 2016, and upgrading the two frigates is one of the targets in the country’s defense strategy.
The ships were bought from Great Britain’s Royal Navy 12 years ago. In December last year, the British Prime Minister David Cameron said that the UK would be more than happy to help Romania modernize its frigates.
