03 May 2013

Romania will have to pay some EUR 201 million to the International Monetary Fund IMF, the European Union and the International Bank for Reconstruction and development (IBRD) in May, to service the stand-by loan agreed in 2009, according to the Romanian Government.

The first payment will be made on May 10 to the EU, some EUR 33.8 million, mostly representing interest rates and commissions. On May 15, Romania will pay EUR 2 million – the interest rates and fees to IBRD. The biggest payment will follow on May 23, some EUR 165 million, out of which EUR 154.6 million represent the main loan reimbursement, and EUR 11 million, interest rates and fees.

Romania will have to pay the IMF, the EU and IBRD some EUR 1.1 billion. In the first four months of the year, it has paid some EUR 227 million already.

The payments are part of a EUR 19.9 billion financing package signed off in 2009 with the IMF, the EU and World Bank. The payment peak for this loan will come in 2015, when Romania will have to pay back EUR 1.7 billion.
