Romania to welcome Portuguese military for NATO Air Police drills this spring

04 March 2015

Romania has decided to allow Portuguese army forces to enter and station in the country in May and June this year. Four F16 falcon airplanes, along with 150 military and civilians from the NATO Air Police will arrive in Romania, the country’s Supreme Defense Council decided in its first meeting this year.

Held on Tuesday, March 3, the meeting gathered President Klaus Iohannis, and Prime Minister Victor Ponta, among the team tasked with attending the council get-togethers. It brought about a change in the usual post-meeting statements, which used to have the PM and former President Traian Basescu exchanging harsh words. This time, “the meeting was efficient, constructive and very civilized,” said the PM. “Romania is the most stable and safe country in the region,” he added.

This was the first CSAT meeting headed by the new president Klaus Iohannis. The previous council meeting took place on November 28, 2014, under the helm of the former president Basescu.
