Romania’s toy imports exceed sevenfold the value of exports

06 December 2017

Romania imported toys worth EUR 50 million last year, seven times more than it exported, about EUR 7 million in 2016, according to EU’s statistical office Eurostat.

The Romanian toy market is dominated by distribution-based businesses, reports local Ziarul Financiar. The European Union's situation in this sector is similar to Romania’s. The market is dominated by Chinese toys, which account for 85% of the total EU toy imports.

There are toy producers in Romania, but they sell more abroad that in the country, said Daniel Minciuna, one of the shareholders in the Nichiduta Trading toy business.

“We’ve brought a lot of pieces (from Romanian producers), but people don’t want them. In Germany, they are in top sales, Romanians prefer electric cars, not educational toys,” he added.

Nichiduta Trading has a turnover of RON 22 million (EUR 4.7 million).
