Romania wants to include smoked fish from the Danube among EU’s protected products
The smoked Danube mackerel is to get European protection this year. It would be the first product from the Danube Delta that is included among EU’s protected products.
Romania started last year the process to add smoked fish to the register of protected designations of origin. This could happen this year, reports local Agerpres.
According to estimates of Tulcea Directorate for Agriculture and Rural Development (DADR), the European certification documentation for the smoked Danube mackerel will be forwarded to the Ministry of Agriculture by the end of September.
Three other Romanian products were set to get European protection this year: the Ibanesti cheese (Telemeaua de Ibanesti), the Sibiu Salami and the Novac smoked fish from Tara Barsei (Novacul afumat din Tara Barsei).
The Topoloveni plum jam (Magiun de prune Topoloveni) is the only Romanian product added by the European Commission to the register of protected designations of origin (PDO) and protected geographical indications (PGI).
