Romania Waters Administration manager resigns after floods

31 July 2014

The general manager of Romania’s Waters National Administration (ANAR), Vasile Pintilie, officially announced his resignation on Wednesday, July 31.

His announcement comes after Prime Minister Victor Ponta criticized him for being on holiday this week, when parts of Southern Romania were flooded. Ponta even asked for Pinitilie's resignation, according to official sources quoted by Mediafax.

Floods caused by heavy rains hit parts of Southern Romania this week as rivers in this part of the country had record flows. Code red for flooding was issued in Valcea, Olt, Teleorman and Arges counties and code orange was announced for rivers in Timis and Caras-Severin.

More than 1,100 people have been evicted and about 100 homes have been destroyed since flooding started. Another 168 homes have been damaged and more than 2,000 have been flooded, interior minister Gabriel Oprea announced. Flooding also affected seven national roads and more secondary roads.

The ANAR director said he has coordinated the activity of the institution by telephone during this difficult period. The “Apele Romane” (Romania’s Waters) administration manages all the rivers in Romania. The institution is subordinated to the Environment Ministry.
