Romania to export some 3 mln tonnes of wheat despite weak crop
Romania will still export some 3 million tonnes of wheat in the coming agricultural year despite a sharp plunge in the crop caused by adverse weather, agriculture minister Adrian Oros estimates, local Capital.ro reported.
He put this year's crop at 6-6.5 million tonnes (the Government's previous official estimate was 5.4 mln tonnes). The domestic consumption is estimated at some 3 mln tonnes (out of which 2.2 mln tonnes are milling wheat, 550,000 tonnes seed wheat, and 400,000 tonnes for fodder).
Last year, Romania harvested some 10 mln tonnes of wheat.
Minister Oros admitted that the farmers would be hit hard by the weak crop, particularly in the context of the outstanding production elsewhere, sending the global wheat price down.
