Romania’s football team will play the opening match of next year’s European Championship (EUFA Euro 2016) against hosts France. The match will take place on June 10, on Stade de France.

Romania was drawn into the tournament’s group A, where they will meet France, Switzerland, and Albania.

Romania has played 15 times against France and scored three victories. France has won seven of the matches, and five matches have ended in draws. The latest direct match between the two teams has been on September 6, 2011, in the Euro 2012 qualifiers. The match, which also marked the official opening of Bucharest’s National Arena, ended 0-0.

France has two European titles (1984 and 2000) and a world champions’ title (1998) while Romania has no international title. Romania’s best international performance was reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup in the US, in 1994.

The Euro 2016 is the first European Championship in which 24 teams will compete for the title. They have been drawn into six groups of four teams each. The first two teams in each group and the four best third-ranked teams will move to the eliminatory stage of the competition.

The tournament’s most difficult group is Group E, which brings together Belgium, Italy, Ireland, and Sweden.
