Romanian artist Nicolae Grigorescu’s ‘Young peasant girl’ painting sells for EUR 45,000 in Paris

Two works by the Romanian painter Nicolae Grigorescu were sold this week at an auction organized by Boisgirard in Paris. The painter’s ‘Young peasant girl’ was sold for EUR 45,000, while the second work, namely ‘The shepherd and his dog’ sold for EUR 27,000.

‘Young peasant girl’ had an estimated price between EUR 40,000 and EUR 50,000, while the second was estimated between EUR 25,000 and EUR 30,000. See the auction’s entire results here.

The painting ‘Little peasant girl resting’ by Nicolae Grigorescu, was sold for EUR 270,000 in 2011 at an Artmark auction organized last year. Other works of Nicoale Grigorescu were sold for over EUR 200,000 in 2011, namely ‘Pub in Rucar’ sold for EUR 230,000 on March 23, and the Romanian painter’s ‘At the edge of the forest’ at EUR 200,000.

Nicolae Grigorescu, one of the founders of modern painting in Romania, lived at the end of the 19th century. He studied in Paris and returned to Romania where he joined the Romanian army in the War of Independence as a frontline painter. He is mostly known for his portraits of peasant girls, several ox carts and rural landscapes.
