Romanian cable operator wants to launch its own mobile services

Digital Cable Systems, the Romanian cable operator which operates under the brand AKTA, is currently negotiating with two mobile operators, as it’s interested to launch its own mobile services as Mobile Virtual Network Operator by the end of this year or the beginning of next year, reports local Hotnews.ro.

The company recently received a EUR 10 million loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. It will use the money to extend its fiber optics network, adjust the existing networks to the broadband Internet, and acquire several smaller players in the local market.

Digital Cable Systems’ network covers over 2,500 towns and villages in 24 counties. The company had a turnover of EUR 39.5 million and EUR 2 million losses in 2014. Its majority shareholder is American investment fund PineBridge.
