Romanian climber conquers Himalaya’s Manaslu peak

05 October 2017

Young Romanian climber Mădălina Condrea managed to climb the Himalaya’s Manaslu, the eighth tallest peak in the world.

The 28 year old is the first Romanian woman to climb the 8,163 meter peak. The first Romanian to have climbed this peak was Horia Colibășanu, in 2006.

Condrea was born in Romania, in Arad, but has been living in Switzerland for the past ten years. She teaches foreign languages there.

She told local media that she is doing touristic climbing and she has no claim to being recognized as an alpinist. She was helped by sherpa Mingma Dukpa in her climb, aradon.ro reported. She met him when climbing the 6,200 meter peak Imja Tse, in Eastern Nepal.

She did not take up a specific training for the climb but stuck with a daily routine of swimming she has had for 12 years, and a daily habit of running 10 km, something she has been doing for the past 10 years. Once a week, she runs a distance of 20 km.

It took her nine years to gather the funds for the expedition.

“It was a dream of mine. For nine years I gathered funding and thought about getting there. It wasn’t easy, I cannot say it was easy, but all the suffering was worth it,” she said, quoted by Digi24.ro.
