Sundance Select has acquired North American distribution rights to director Cristian Mungiu’s latest movie - ‘Beyond the Hills’, according to a statement. The Romanian director wrote, directed and, with Pascal Cauchteaux and Jean-Pierre Dardenne, produced ‘Beyond the Hills.’

"Cristian Mungiu established himself as one of the great directors with '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days,'" said Jonathan Sehring, president of Sundance Selects/IFC Films. "We're honored to continue our relationship with him on his latest film."

The film tells the story of two young Romanian women Alina and Voichita, after growing up together in an orphanage, Alina moves to Germany. She returns to Romania to find her childhood friend and take her back to Germany, however Voichita is living in a remote convent and is reluctant to leave her life there. Alina attempts to persuade her friend to move to Germany but superstitious locals believe she is possessed. What is described as an exorcism with surprising results ensues.

Cristian Mungiu’s '4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days’ won the Palme d'Or and Fipresci International Critics Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
