Romanian director enters Sundance 2015 competition with documentary on communism
The Chuck Norris vs. Communism documentary, directed by Romanian Ilinca Calugareanu, was selected in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at next year’s Sundance Festival.
The UK/Germany/Romania film will have its world premiere at the festival and will compete with 11 other documentaries, such as The Amina Profile – directed by Sophie Deraspe, Censored Voices – directed by Mor Loushy, The Chinese Mayor – directed by Hao Zhou, Dark Horse- directed by Louise Osmond and Dreamcatcher – directed by Kim Longinotto.
“In 1980s Romania, thousands of Western films smashed through the Iron Curtain, opening a window to the free world for those who dared to look. A black market VHS racketeer and courageous female translator brought the magic of film to the masses and sowed the seeds of a revolution,” reads the Romanian movie presentation on Sundance.org.
Sundance is a film festival dedicated to the independent cinema, which takes place annually in Utah, U.S. The 2015 edition will take place between January 22 and February 1.
