Romanian Electrica's acquisitions in Moldova, conditioned by pro-EU attitude

25 February 2015

Romanian electricity distributor Electrica is interested in entering the power distribution market in the Republic of Moldova through an acquisition, but this depends on the Moldovian authorities’ pro-European attitude, said the company’s director Ioan Rosca, cited by local Mediafax.

Electrica currently ponders taking part in the privatization of three power distribution companies in the Republic of Moldova, as the market there offers a higher rate of return than in Romania.

In November last year, the Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) reduced the regulated rate of return for energy distributors from 8.53% to 7.45%. Electrica and the company’s subsidiaries challenged this decision in court.

Electrica is 49% state-controlled.
