Romanian farmers turn into entrepreneurs to get EU funds

More Romanian farmers have been registering for business in recent months, as this has become a mandatory condition for those who want to get EU funds for agriculture starting 2015.

Romanians registered over 6,000 new businesses in the agriculture sector, in the first five months of 2015, three times more than in the same period of 2014, according to official data from the National Trade Registry’s Office (ONRC).

The 4,000 new businesses in agriculture accounted for 85% of the growth in new business registrations over the January-May period. A total of 51,400 new enterprises registered in the first five months of 2015, up by 4,700 (or 10.3%) compared to the same period of 2014.

The number of new limited liability companies (SRL) went up by 3.9%, to 26,800. The number of new individuals registered for business (known in Romania as PFA) went up by almost 20%, to almost 16,000, and the number of individual enterprises increased by 15%, to over 8,100. The PFA and individual enterprises are widely used by farmers who register their businesses.

Agriculture went up to second place in terms of new business registrations, after commerce, where the number of new enterprises went down by 8.4%, to just over 14,000.

Among the sectors that registered higher numbers of new enterprises in the first five months are constructions, with 4,380 firms (up by 13%), transports and logistics, with 3,360 new firms (up by 14%), and manufacturing, with 3,220 new enterprises (up by 10%). The number of new companies in the administrative and support services sector also went up by more than half, to 1,780.
