Romanian health cards to be sent via post this fall, become mandatory from 2015

08 September 2014

Over 12.5 million Romanians will receive their health insurance cards by the end of this year via the Romanian Post. The health card will become mandatory from 2015 for all medical services covered by the National Health Insurance House.

The House signed a EUR 8.5 mln contract with the Romanian post over the next four years, and distribution will start in September.

Health Minister Nicolae Banicioiu recently said Romanians will receive these cards after September 20.

The health card will include the person’s name, the identification code in the health insurance system, the card’s number, and the validity – 5 years. The card’s chip will also have the personal number and name saved.

Everyone over 18 will have such a card and use it every time they use health services. Medical suppliers will have to buy card readers for the system to work.
