Romanian Minister: Education budget to reach 4.5% of the GDP next year
The Government wants to allocate 4.5% of the GDP for education next year, said Liviu Pop, Minister for Social Dialogue. For this year, the funds given for education amounted to about 4% of the GDP, reports local Capital.ro.
In 2013, public expenses allocated to education represented 4.1% of the country’s GDP, only higher than in Greece, Slovakia, and Bulgaria, according to data from Eurostat, the European Statistics Office. Romania was thus among the last five countries in the European Union based on the budget allocated to education.
The EU average is of 5.34% of GDP spent on education, and Romania is still below that, despite having increased the ratio in the last couple of years.
