Romanian Music Industry Association chases local online file-sharing music users

25 July 2010

Romanian authorities have recently started to chase the illegal download of copyrighted music and films by local Internet users. The Music Industry Association has raised proofs against 40 users of the DC++ software, which allows peer-to-peer sharing of music and films among Internet users. The files are sent to the Fraud Investigation Service within local Police offices, which will proceed to searching the homes of those incriminated.

Sharing copyrighted material without the consent of the copyright users, including through online channels, is penalized with one to four years of jail.

Romania ranks high in terms of pirated music and films, with one of the highest numbers of DC++ and torrent users. This is one of the reasons for which many of the international artists have been avoiding Romania in their world tours.
