Romanian Orthodox archdiocese goes into renewable energy to power up its convents
A Romanian Orthodox archdiocese recently bought a micro hydro power plant from state-owned electricity producer Hidroelectrica for EUR 382,000. The plant, which is known Calugarita (The Nun), is located in Arges county, on the Valea lui Stan (Stan's Valley) river.
When asked why they decided to make this purchase, the archdiocese’s representatives said they wanted to use it to power up their 700 convents, hermitage, and parishes, according to Mediafax.
The micro power plant has an installed capacity of 630 kW which is enough to power up some 180 households.
Hidroelectrica put on sale 34 micro hydro power plants but only managed to sell two of them, for a total of EUR 876,000. The company will organize another auction, lowering the sale price for the remaining 32 plants.
