Romanian Orthodox Church loses 166,000 ha of forests in court

28 November 2014

The Archiepiscopate of Suceava and Radauti within the Romanian Orthodox Church recently lost the lawsuit against the Romanian state, after claiming 166,000 ha forests from the National Forest Administration Romsilva, according to the irrevocable decision ruled by the High Court of Cassation and Justice yesterday, quoted by Hotnews.ro.

The land was given in 2004 by former Prime Minister Adrian Nastase to the Archiepiscopate of Suceava, then led by IPS Pimen - a former Security Police informer. "Adrian Nastase enrolled among the great benefactors and protectors of the monasteries," wrote at that time IPS Pimen. Representatives of church lost the lawsuit at the Cluj Court of Appeal in 2013, and also lost the appeal filed in the High Court.
