Romanian parliament approves rises in state pensions
MPs in Romania's Chamber of Deputies recently voted in favor of the proposed rise in pensions. The bill passed with 307 votes in favor, two against and three abstentions. However, the government and the opposition did miss the chance to blame one another for the current level of pensions.
The proposal passed was included in the draft budget laid out on January 21. The basic state pension point is to increase by 4 percent to RON 762.1 (around EUR 175 ). The total pensions budget will be around EUR 11. 5 billion.
The state pension point is a standard unit of measurement for state pensions. Depending on work history, claimants receive multiples, or more commonly fractions, of the basic pension point.
During the parliamentary session in which the bill was passed, MPs also discussed pensions for retired politicians, with some suggesting that changes to the current system are urgently needed.
