Romanian PM says large German car maker to decide on opening Romanian factory

25 March 2013

dacia factory romaniaA large German car maker could join the two existing car makers in Romania by opening a factory locally, and the company's board will make a final decision on this matter, said Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who did not disclose the name of the company. “In the Government meeting, on the confidential list as it was agreed, we approved a memorandum of understanding with one of the largest and most prestigious companies in Germany, which will open a factory in Romania. I don't know if it is the largest, but maybe it is one of the best known. The understanding was to announce this together,” said the PM during a TV show.

The Romanian Government was previously in talks with the German group Daimler, but the group chose Hungary instead of Romania. Last fall, the local media reported BMW was interested in opening a factory in Lugoj, where they needed 100 hectares of land, but the talks were only in the beginning back then, according to the Lugoj mayor.

Dacia Renault and Ford are currently the only automotive producers in Romania, both having taken over existing production facilities.
