Romanian Police break group of local road bandits
The Romanian Police have managed to break an organized crime group specialized in robbing trucks and cars traveling on Bucharest’s ring road and on the Bucharest-Pitesti highway.
The group was made of 10 men, who were taken in for questioning on Monday, December 28. The Police also searched their homes looking for stolen goods and other evidence of their illegal activities.
The 10 men apparently engaged moving trucks. They would pull their cars next to the truck and one of the thieves would jump from the hood of a car into the truck. The man would cut the truck's tarpaulin and get inside the trailer from where he would throw goods to his accomplices. All these happened while the attacked trucks were still on the move, according to the Police.
The Police also mentioned a specific case. One night, the robbers plundered a truck carrying electronics. They managed to steal 79 laptops and other equipment worth a total of EUR 40,000. The Police managed to recover the stolen goods.
The men would also attack passenger vehicles. They had a different operating mode for this. They would get close to moving cars and sting their tires. When the driver pulled over to fix the tire, the robbers would sneak by him and steal whatever they would find in the car. They also used force sometimes, if caught in the act.
The Police have asked the court to issue an arrest warrant for the ten suspects aged 18 to 42.
The Romanian Police broke a similar crime group in June 2012. At that time, the authorities even caught the robbers in the act. Here's a video of the action.
