Romanian Police campaign against drunk driving using choir of mourners near clubs
The Romanian Police chose to campaign against drinking and driving in an unconventional way. A choir of mourners got the attention near clubs and pubs, as they started mourning those who exited the clubs and went to their cars to drive after partying and possibly drinking. The wailers, all women dressed in black, had created a special song about drinking and driving as a cause of death.
The Romanian Police wants to continue its campaign reminding those who drink and drive that they are driving to their funeral. In the coming future, they plan to hung funeral towels on the rear-view mirror of cars parked near pubs and clubs.
Romania, unlike some other countries, has zero tolerance to drink driving. Last year, 300 of the 9,260 serious car accidents in Romania were caused by drunk drivers. In Romania, a blood alcohol level over 0.5 per thousand is considered a crime, down from a previous threshold of 0.8. When caught driving after drinking, drivers risk jail, a fine between RON 660 and RON 1,475 (some EUR 137 to EUR 337), as well as losing their driving license for a period of time.
