Romanian president and Russian vice-PM unofficial row via media, Twitter involves allegations into drinking habits

12 May 2014

A recent high – level, yet unofficial row between the Romanian president Traian Basescu and Russian vice-prime minister Dmitri Rogozin involved messages on Twitter, as well as allegations about each other’s drinking habits.

The „conversation” started with a message that Rogozin posted on Twitter saying he will fly over Romania in a strategic bomber, as Romania refused to allow his plane to fly over its airspace. Then, he took to Twitter again to respond to Romanian president’s question on how many vodkas he had before making his initial statement.

„It’s a total lack of respect towards another state,” added Basescu quoted by OpiniaTimisoarei.ro. The Russian official responded, again, on Tweeter: „I wonder how many glasses Basescu himself 'emptied for courage' before closing Romanian sky for our plane?” tweeted Rogozin, who is very active on social media.

Last weekend, Rogozin tweeted: „Upon the US request Romania has closed its air space for my plane. Ukraine doesn't allow me to pass through again. Next time I'll fly on board TU-160,” triggering high level reactions.
