Romanian President Iohannis plans to attend each Government meeting

19 December 2018

Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis said on December 18 in Vienna that he plans to attend each Government meeting for a period of time, after he “noticed certain openness for cooperation” from Prime Minister Vasilica Dancila, local G4media.ro reported.

One day earlier, Iohannis officially asked the Government to inform him in advance of each meeting’s agenda implying that in this way he wants to prevent the endorsement of inappropriate bills (such as the amnesty and pardon bill announced by the ruling coalition).

To smooth his participation at the government’s meeting, he requested this time the government to address the Brexit topic -- as the foreign policy topics come into the responsibility if the President.

In an official answer quoted by Wall-Street.ro, PM Dancila assured that President Iohannis will be invited each time the government discusses topics related to the “foreign policy, defence and public order”, a list that visibly does not include directly the amnesty and pardon bill. Speaking for Mediafax, government secretary general Toni Grebla stated that the President attending each government meeting would breach the principle of the separation of the powers.
