Romanian President’s brother indicted for influence peddling

15 July 2014

Mircea Basescu, Romanian President Traian Basescu’s brother, was indicted under preventive arrest by prosecutors of the National Anticorruption Directorate DNA for influence peddling.

He allegedly asked large amounts of money from members of mobster Sandu Anghel’s family, in exchange for the promise that he would try to obtain a favorable sentence in an attempted homicide case in which Anghel was prosecuted.

Another man, Marian Capatana, was also indicted in the same case, for complicity to influence peddling.

Both Basescu and Capatana were arrested for 30 days on June 20, following a decision of the Bucharest Court.
