Romanian Prosecutor’s Office reopens the Miners’ Riot case

06 February 2015

Romanian authorities want to re-open a case focusing on the miners’ uprising in the summer of 1990, and canceled previous decisions not to prosecute anyone in this case.

General prosecutor Tiberiu Nitu has re-started prosecution,  but it is up to the Supreme Court  to rule on his request, reports local mediafax.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) demanded Romania on September 17, 2014, to continue investigations in the miners’ riot file.

The ECHR showed the state’s obligation to do justice to the victims of crimes against humanity, regardless of how long ago they happened. ECHR said that Romania has breached three articles from the European Convention on Human Rights.
