Romanian song of the week: Americandrim by Puya feat. Connect-R
This week's pick for the Romanian song was inspired by the 4th of July celebration in the US, which is also celebrated by the American community here in Romania.
Romanian singer Puya launched at the end of last year the song 'Americandrim', which speaks of the extensive use of American brands and values in Romania, to the detriment of the country's own values. The song is sung half in English, half in Romanian.
Puya, a well known Romanian rapper, collaborated with George Hora to create this song, as well as with Romanian singer Connect-R for the chorus. “I have started to think how many English words we use in our day to day discussions and I realized there are so many. And this is not all. After the Revolution, Romania has been exposed to American values, brands, such as the entire Europe has. Even the type of music we sing is American-inspired. It's good for countries to stick to their national identity. We were French during Caragiale's time, then Russian during the communists and now we are Americans, during the democracy...I wish we were just Romanians,” said Puya upon the launch of his new single.
Puya, born in 1979, by his real name Dragos Gardescu, lived in a poor neighborhood in Bucharest and started singing hip-hop in 1995, initially with the band La Familia.
