Romanian woman unjustly imprisoned for 13 months in the UK, gives birth in prison

02 February 2018

A Romanian woman spent 13 months in a British prison before her trial was stopped after evidence cast doubt on the complainant's story. However, the Romanian woman named Petruta-Cristina Bosoanca had to give birth in prison due to the failures in this case, BBC reported.

She was arrested in December 2016 on charges of trafficking and prostitution, and was released from prison on Monday.

The trial of Petruta-Cristina Bosoanca was stopped after nearly three weeks, after the complainant in the case had been cross-examined. Some 65,000 lines of text messages were disclosed to the defence in the second day of trial.

The three defendants in this case, namely Adrian Iordan, Anisoara Lautaru and Petruta-Cristina Bosoanca, were accused of conspiring to bring a young woman from Romania to the UK for prostitution. The complainant claimed the defendants forced her into prostitution, and that she had become pregnant after coming to the UK. However, she was examined soon after Bosoanca’s arrest, and the test had shown that the woman was already pregnant when she entered the UK.

Although the defense had requested medical evidence about the pregnancy, it had repeatedly been told that this evidence doesn’t exist. Moreover, although social media messages also showed that the complainant had been discussing the pregnancy with friends, BBC says these messages were not disclosed until December 2017, although the Police knew about them since January 2017.

Now, the Romanian woman hopes someone will be punished for these failures that led to her giving birth in prison.
